Building Evacuation Plans
Building evacuation safety tips:
- Get to know the buildings you occupy. Know the locations of the building exits, fire alarm pull stations, and fire extinguishers.
- Never assume “it’s just a drill”. Respond appropriately to all building alarms and take immediate action.
- Use the closest building exit when the alarm is activated. Use the nearest door even if the exit door has a sign indicating the door is alarmed, just push the door open and exit quickly.
- Know the evacuation assembly point for the buildings you frequent. Assembly points can be found on the evacuation plans posted throughout buildings. If the assembly point is not know, evacuate and move at least 100 feet away from the building.
- Take your belongings only if they are within arms-reach. It may be a while before you are permitted back into the building.
- For your safety and to allow easy access for emergency responders, after exiting move away from the building, preferably across the street and at least 75-100 feet away. If you are sitting outside a building when the alarm is triggered, please move an appropriate distance away from the building.
- Do not reenter the building until told it is safe to do so, which will be after the fire department issues an “All Clear”.
- Emergency procedures are posted in numerous locations across campus, take time to review them.
