The following message was sent to all Mines community members on 8/16/20:

Move-in, welcome week and the start of classes is upon us. We’re so excited to have you join us and we’re looking forward to welcoming you and introducing you to one another, Mines faculty and staff, and your future friends, teammates and collaborators across campus.

Each new class at Mines participates in a number of experiences that connect its members to one another, the campus community, and all generations of Orediggers across our nearly 150 year history. That will continue to be true in the days and weeks ahead. These formal and informal events will commence as early as Monday, and will include Celebration of Mines, Convocation and more.

Unfortunately, one of our most cherished traditions will not be included in the first week’s events. Despite more than four months of planning, and the drafting of more than a half-dozen models for safely staging this event, new requirements received from Jefferson County late last week make it impossible to hold the M Climb during Fall Kickoff this year. We are disappointed, but understand that the county is concerned about protecting your health as well as the health of the broader community that Mines is part of.

Being the creative engineers that we are, we’re not giving up and are looking for other opportunities to have you experience the view from the M, get your hard-hats painted and have your rocks become part of Mines lore and history. So, that required 10-lb. rock? Still required. So please, pack accordingly! You will need that rock sooner than you may think, and will hear more details at Convocation.

Here in Golden, the entire campus is ready for your arrival. We’re excited to see you, start the school year and, perhaps, create some new traditions unique to your class.

See you soon!

Sincerely,

Dan Fox, Vice President of Student Life
