The following message was sent to the Mines campus on 4/2/20:

Dear Mines Community,

As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 outbreak, it is becoming clear that we are not likely to be able to return to in-person instruction in time for the scheduled start of the Summer 2020 semester. Rather than delay that decision and risk further disruption to your coursework and summer plans, I am announcing today that only remote delivery courses will be offered in the Summer I session (May 11-June 19).

The majority of Summer I courses will operate in a manner similar to our current mode of remote delivery, using a combination of Zoom and Canvas to provide synchronous online instruction (you log in at a specific time). There are also more than 25 online courses that will be available asynchronously (you can log in at any time).  Details on all will be made available as soon as possible and before the end of Summer 2020 Registration, which began Monday, March 30.

With respect to field session courses, some programs are planning to offer parts of their field sessions remotely while others are considering delaying until the Summer II session (June 22-July 31).  Each program is working on a plan to ensure that their graduating seniors can fulfill field session requirements and pursue their post-graduation plans, including job offers. Please check with your programs concerning their plans.

We understand that a field session schedule change may cause issues for our students who have internships and/or job offers predicated on them being available by mid-June. Similarly, these changes may affect faculty who have research project plans and summer travel scheduled. That’s why we are communicating this change now, to give as much notice as possible to everyone.

These are not changes we make lightly but our priorities are to protect the health of our campus community, support our state’s efforts to protect Colorado and to ensure that students continue to progress academically. While not ideal, this decision and this timing help us continue to meet those priorities. Thanks for your understanding and patience.
