Dear Mines students,

Fall Break is just two and a half weeks away—and with it comes the opportunity to relax, catch up on the latest Netflix releases, do some reading or gaming, or put some hours into a passion project. No matter what you’re planning, we hope you’ll use the time wisely—and as it was intended. It is called a “break,” after all.

While we want you to pause and recharge, we also urge you to do so here in Golden. In past years many students have used the long weekend to travel home or visit friends on other campuses. We hope you’ll stay put instead. The “Mines bubble” is proving to be one of the safer places to be right now. Thanks to you and the efforts of Mines faculty and staff, we are on track to finish the fall semester without a major interruption and without having to move all courses online, as many other schools have done.

Should you choose to spend your break here on campus, we’re going to make sure you have access to the facilities, food and amenities you require—from events to virtual Career Center sessions, Starbucks lattes to the SRC swimming pool.

As you’ll see below, campus will largely be open and available to you Oct. 19-20, as well as the preceding weekend.

Fall Break Hours and Services:

  • Arthur Lakes Library will remain open and on its normal schedule Oct. 17-20. The library will be open Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mindful Mondays is still scheduled to occur at 3 p.m. on Oct. 19.
  • All Mines classrooms and academic buildings will remain open as if classes were in session. While some labs and departments will be closed or have reduced hours, students can enter buildings and classroom spaces, designated study areas and more. We’re asking all labs and studios to post their Fall Break hours on their doors beginning next week.

    • Fighting Hunger at Mines is doing a cooking event over Zoom during Fall Break weekend. SAIL is going to provide up to 50 free cooking kits with ingredients for participants to pick up before Fall Break begins.
    • The Society for Economic Geologists will offer a course on gold panning on Monday and Tuesday. They are able to accommodate 20 students at the Arapahoe gold panning bar. SAIL will cover mileage or Lyft costs for participants requiring transportation.

Fall Break is an important time for all of you—and our community. We hope you enjoy it safely. Thanks for reading and for all you are doing. Hang in there. Break will be here before you know it.

Go Orediggers!
