Registration Requirements for Combined Students

Coursework used towards a Mines graduate degree must:

  • Meet graduate school requirements
  • Must have a grade of C- or better or PRG grade (any courses that are double counted must have a grade of B- or better)
  • Be approved by your advisor
  • Be listed on your Degree Audit form

Combined students can potentially earn almost all credits towards a graduate degree while still an undergraduate student, but must register as a graduate student for at least one semester prior to receiving their graduate degrees.

Ways to Count Courses Completed as an Undergraduate Student Toward Your Graduate Degree Program

Double Count Credit: (courses taken while an undergraduate)

Certain graduate programs may allow Combined Degree Program students (students with uninterrupted registration between their undergraduate degree program and graduate degree program, excluding summer registration) to fulfill part of the requirements of their graduate degree by including up to six hours of specified course credits which also were used in fulfilling the requirements of their undergraduate degree. These courses; referred to as double counted courses, may be applied toward fulfilling graduate degree requirements. Use of double counted courses is subject to academic department/program approval.

 Double counted courses must:

  • Meet all requirements for graduate credit, but their grades are not included in calculating the graduate GPA.
    • Some degree programs only allow students to double count 500 level courses (not 400 level), so please check the degree program for details
  • Must have a grade of B- or better (as listed on the undergraduate transcript)
    • Some degree programs have stricter limitations, so please check the degree program for details.
  • 400 or 500 level courses may be used
    • If using 500-level courses, you must complete the 500-level form available from the Registrar’s Office
  • Complete the 500-Level form & indicate the courses will be used toward both the UG & GR degrees (Box 1 “Undergraduate Credit”)
  • Maximum of six credits may be applied to Graduate degree
  • Courses remain on undergraduate transcript and count towards the undergraduate GPA
  • Eligible for undergraduate financial aid
  • Eligible for COF

Graduate Only Credit: (courses taken while an undergraduate)

  • To qualify for this type of credit, students MUST have done the following by census day of the semester these courses are taken.
    • Been accepted into a combined program
    • Submitted intent to enroll information (IE’d)
    • If the above 2 items have not been done by census day, the courses will count as transfer credit & are subject to transfer credit limitations.
  • Courses cannot be used to fulfill any undergraduate degree requirements
  • Must complete the 500-Level form & indicate the courses will be used for Graduate Credit Only (Box 2 “Graduate Credit” – Option 1)
  • No limitation on number of 500-level credits
  • Courses count towards graduate GPA and will move to the graduate transcript after UG degree awarded
  • Not eligible for undergraduate financial aid
  • Not eligible for COF

Transfer Credits: (courses taken while an undergraduate)

  • Cannot guarantee that 400 or 500 level courses will be transferable until the undergraduate degree has been awarded and the Office of Graduate Studies has verified that courses were not used towards awarding the undergraduate degree
  • Transfer credit limitations apply
  • Cannot use courses towards undergraduate degree
  • 500-Level courses – complete the 500-Level form & indicate the courses are to be used for Graduate Credit Only (Box 2 “Graduate Credit” – Option 2)
  • 400-level courses – no form is available, contact the Registrar to tell them not to use the course towards the UG degree
  • Courses remain on undergraduate transcript and count towards undergraduate GPA
  • 500-level courses or higher are not eligible for COF
  • 500-level courses or higher are not eligible for undergraduate financial aid
