Transgender Flag Day
August 19
Monica Helms designed the trans flag on August 19th, 1999 – The blue stripes stands as a traditional boy color, with the pink a traditional color for girls. The white stripe in the middle is a neutral color symbolizing the people to move or transition between the two sides of the flag.
But why should we care about this? So what?
Well, the “so what” is that the transgender community is slowly but surely coming out into the open. For the past few decades, sexuality has been the main hot topic and spotlit by the LGBTQ+ community. More and more places across the world have been accepting and working on equal rights for the gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual community. Gender identity, however, hasn’t reached the same level of understanding, acceptance, or even recognition within the LGBTQ+ community, let alone people outside of the community.
As we see the trans flag become more accepted, we know a significant foothold has been gained in recognizing the trans community as a distinct group of people within the wide spectrum of humanity.
