SUMMET: Summer Multicultural Engineering Training

The Summer Multicultural Engineering Training (SUMMET) program is an engineering, science, and technology program designed for rising juniors and seniors who are from underrepresented populations, including ethnic/racial minorities, women, and prospective first-generation college students. 

SUMMET combines coursework, hands-on projects, industry tours, team-building activities, and social events. SUMMET provides exposure to the lifestyle, opportunities, and challenges of college and is designed to help build skills and experiences for a smooth transition from high school to college. SUMMET is a one-week residential program, allowing participants to live on campus for the duration of the program, experience life as a college student, and participate in STEM-related curriculum instruction. This program is available at no cost to participants, with the exception of a $50 confirmation fee for students accepted into the program. Transportation to and from the program is not included in the cost and is currently the responsibility of participants.

Challenge Summer Bridge Program

The Challenge program is an opportunity for select incoming freshman to prepare for the academic rigors of Mines while also building a strong social network of support. Hosted by the Multicultural Engineering Program, Challenge scholars get a preview of courses at Mines through pre-Calculus I, pre-Chemistry I, and Engineering Design, build academic skills through pre-collegiate workshops, and grow their community through exciting weekly activities. The Challenge program is available to students by invite-only, and is designed to support incoming freshman in building a strong foundation at Mines while making the transition from high school to college.

Students will feel challenged with coursework, feel supported by new friendships, and will be encouraged to persist in their college goals. Will you accept the Mines Challenge?

First-Year Innovation & Research Scholar Training

The First-Year Innovation and Research Scholar Training (FIRST) Fellowship offers an opportunity for select, highly motivated first-year students to participate in original research experiences coupled with a focus on innovation. FIRST fellowship recipients are awarded up to a $1000 paid hourly to compensate for their time spent on research. Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year open July 1st, 2022 and close July 31st, 2022.*

This year, we are happy to announce FIRST is also accepting applications from incoming transfer students. Upon announcement of FIRST recipients, awarded students will work with the office of Undergraduate Research Scholars and the Registrar’s Office to register for the required one credit seminar to be added to your schedule. Campus Visits

Working with Undergraduate Admissions, MEP hosts numerous pre-college groups throughout the academic year. Groups can arrange for:

• a campus tour;
• current MEP student panel; and
• general admission advising session.

MEP can also assist with coordinating tours of the:

• U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Center
• Geology Museum
