PEGN 251

Fluid Mechanics | 2018 – current

PEGN 251 is an undergraduate class offered in spring and fall semesters for sophomores. The class has three credit hours, and it covers properties of fluids related to fluid flow, descriptions of fluid flow, integral approach to mass and momentum balance, differential descriptions of fluid flow, Bernouli equation, and laminar / turbulent flow in pipes.

PEGN 310

Reservoir Fluid Properties | 2009 – 2014

PEGN 310 is an undergraduate class offered in the fall semester for the juniors. The class focuses on properties of fluids encountered in petroleum engineering. This class is no longer offered starting from Fall 2016. It is replaced by PEGN 312 (below).

PEGN 312

Properties of Petroleum Fluids | 2016 – 2018

PEGN 312 is a new undergraduate class offered in the fall semester for the juniors. It replaces PEGN 310 Reservoir Fluid Properties and PEGN 413 PVT Lab. The class has three credit hours. This class focuses on properties of fluids encountered in petroleum engineering. The contents include: phase behavior, density, viscosity, interfacial tension, and composition of oil, gas, and brine systems; interpretation of laboratory data for engineering applications; flash calculations with k-values and equation of state; introduction to phase behavior and fluid properties software. The labs for this class include distillation, flash separation, interfacial tension and wettability.

PEGN 315

Summer Field Session I | 2009 – 2015, 2017, 2019

This two-week course is taught in the summer after the completion of the sophomore year is designed to introduce the students to oil and gas field and other engineering operations. On-site visits to various oil field operations in the past included the Rocky Mountain region, the U.S. Gulf Coast, California, Alaska, Canada and Europe. Topics covered include drilling, completions, stimulations, surface facilities, production, artificial lift, reservoir, geology and geophysics. Also included are environmental and safety issues as related to the petroleum industry.

PEGN 511

Advanced Thermodynamics and Phase Behavior | 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022

PEGN 511 is a graduate class that covers the essentials of thermodynamics for understanding the phase behavior of petroleum fluids such as natural gas and oil. It provides ample exercises on modeling of phase behavior of single and multi-component systems with equations of states. Other topics often covered include: introduction to PVT laboratory studies, surface phenomena, and statistical thermodynamics.

PEGN 601

Applied Mathematics for Fluid Flow in Porous Media | 2010, 2014, 2020

PEGN 601 is designed to expose petroleum-engineering students to the analytical mathematical techniques used to solve partial differential equations, especially those that govern steady and transient flow problems in porous media. It covers Bessel’s equation and functions, Laplace and Fourier transformations, the method of sources and sinks, Green’s functions, and boundary integral techniques. Numerical evaluation of various analytical solutions, numerical Laplace transformation and inverse transformation are also discussed.
