Supplies:

  • pencil and ruler
  • 8×10 or 12×12 inch canvas–size doesn’t matter as much, but smaller canvases use less paint
  • acrylic paint (black, white, red, yellow, blue, and brown is all that’s needed, but more colors never hurt)
  • paint brushes: a flat brush, a round brush, and a fan brush, a liner brush, and a wash brush (either the flat or wash brush should be bigger in order to cover the canvas quickly with paint)
  • acrylic paint palette knife–they’re plastic and needed for rock textures
  • paint palette if possible–otherwise recycled large plastic lids would work
  • paper towels (for putting underneath canvas, drying brushes, and cleaning up)
  • disposable cups to hold water for brushes
  • optional: having a spray bottle of water that can give a good mist is useful to keep the paint wet, but that is totally not necessary
