Why am I not able to enroll/waive SHIP online during the open enrollment period?
Have you registered for classes yet? If not, you cannot enroll in SHIP until you have registered for at least one class. Once you have registered, you will likely need to wait a couple of days before AHP has added you into the system.
Are you an online student? Unfortunately, online students are not eligible for SHIP coverage.
Are you a non-degree seeking student? Unfortunately, non-degree seeking students are not eligible for SHIP coverage.
Can I waive in spring if I didn't waive during the open enrollment period?
No. If you are not an incoming spring student, you cannot waive in the spring or summer. The selection you make during the open enrollment period (July 15 – Census Day) is binding for the full academic year.
Can I waive if I missed the annual open enrollment/waiver period?
If you were automatically enrolled in annual SHIP coverage but already have comprehensive medical insurance, unfortunately, the waiver period has closed. Late waiver requests were accepted until October 4, 2024 for a $125 late fee. Formal appeals were accepted after the late waiver deadline. The Appeals Committee has already met for fall semester. We will meet again in spring.
Why is United HealthCare showing me as inactive even though I enrolled in SHIP?
Once enrolling in SHIP, it does take a few business days for UHC to get you activated. If it has been longer than a week, please email ship@mines.edu.
How do I know if my insurance is eligible to waive SHIP?
See the Waiver Requirements on our site.
Where can I find SHIP benefit information?
Review the SHIP Benefits page.
Do I need to cancel SHIP coverage when I graduate?
No, your coverage will automatically terminate. Fall graduate coverage will end on 1/31/25. Spring graduate coverage will end on 7/31/25.
Can I keep SHIP coverage if I withdraw?
Undergraduate students: Students who request a Current Term Withdrawal or Leave of Absence after the semester-specific Add/Drop Deadline are responsible for their tuition and fees. Those who did not waive the Student Health Insurance Plan and paid the associated fee will likely retain their insurance coverage through their semester policy end date – subject to confirmation. Students are encouraged to confirm these details via Undergraduate Studies or ship@mines.edu before submitting a Withdrawal or Leave of Absence request.
Graduate students: If a student chooses to withdraw from their graduate studies, their health insurance coverage will likely be retroactively removed back to the coverage start date for the term. If associated fees are not removed, a student will usually retain their insurance coverage through their semester policy end date. Students are encouraged to confirm these details via Graduate Studies before submitting a Withdrawal or Leave of Absence request.
