Mrs. Starzer is a Colorado native and graduate of the Colorado School of Mines (B.Sc. Engineering).
Beginning her career in Alaska, Mrs. Starzer worked as a Mechanical Engineer for a private mechanical design firm on various public projects. In 1985, Mrs. Starzer joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, where she was responsible for mechanical design and construction of military projects including personnel housing, aircraft hangers, and fuel distribution and containment facilities. In 1999, Mrs. Starzer, with her husband, co-founded the first of four Bonanza Creek companies, which culminated in an Initial Public Offering (IPO) of the fourth company, Bonanza Creek Energy, Inc. (BCEI) in 2011. On August 29, 2012, Mrs. Starzer rang the Opening Bell for the NYSE on behalf of BCEI, and remained active in investments and investor relations through January 2014.
Mrs. Starzer was honored to serve as the first woman on the Colorado School of Mines Foundation Board beginning in 2013 and as a member of the Executive Committee since 2014. She also served on the President Search Committee for the Colorado School of Mines 17th President, Dr. Paul C. Johnson.
In 2013, Mrs. Starzer received the Mines Distinguished Achievement Medal. She has a heart for education and has been an active supporter of various charities, including the American Heart Association Denver 2015 Heart Walk Co-Chair, Bakersfield Civic Dance (1999-2007), Boy Scouts of America Denver 2015 Sports Breakfast Co-Chair, Denver Scholarship Foundation Events Co-Chair (2014, 2015), and the Michael R. and Patricia K. Starzer 2012 CSM Scholarship Endowment Fund. Additional Board service includes the Alpha Omega Seminary, Jinja, Uganda (2003-2016), Bakersfield Camp Gideon’s International Auxiliary President (1997-2000), and Concerned About Petroleum (CAP) Education and Advocacy Group (VP 1996-1998, President 1998-2000, Parliamentarian 2000-2001).
Mrs. Starzer married Michael Starzer after both graduating from Mines. Their oldest daughter, Moriah Hunt, is a graduate from Mines (M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering). Her husband, Patrick Hunt, is also a graduate from Mines (B.Sc. in Engineering with Electrical Specialty and M.Sc. in Applied Physics). Mr. Hunt is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Mines in Applied Physics. Mr. and Mrs. Starzer’s youngest daughter, Micah, is in her junior year at Mines pursuing a B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering.
On December 15, 2015, Mrs. Starzer was appointed to the Colorado School of Mines Board of Trustees.
