3 Minute Research Slam

As of Fall 2020, 3-Minute Research Slam has been put on hold for undergraduate student researchers. The office of Undergraduate Research Scholars hopes to continue 3MRS in the future; however, we are unsure when this will take place. If our office hosts 3MRS for undergraduate student researchers again, we will post further information here, on DailyBlast, Instagram, Mine’s campus-wide calendar, and on our homepage. In the meantime, we encourage you to read this page to learn about what 3MRS looked like in the past. We also encourage you to check out the Three Minute Thesis webpage for graduate student researchers at Mines. We appreciate your understanding!

Three Minute Research Slam (3MRS)

3MRS competition challenges you to make a compelling video presentation of your undergraduate research in three minutes using language accessible to an educated but nontechnical audience. Participating in this competition is an excellent exercise to distill the significance of your research and communicate its relevance to a broader audience.

While preparing your three-minute pitch, you want to make sure to focus on the following:
What is your motivation? What is your proposed approach or solution? How will your work impact the broader community?

3MRS is an undergraduate version of The three-minute research (3MT) competition that was originally developed by The University of Queensland for graduate students. Most universities, including Mines, organize this competition annually for graduate students. We are adopting this idea for our undergraduate research scholars because it places emphasis on the importance of communicating the purpose and significance of their research with clarity to a broader audience–an invaluable skill for our emerging scholars.
