PROJECT NUMBER: 49 | AUTHOR: Kylee Shiekh, Applied Mathematics and Statistics

MENTORS: Dean Nieusma, Engineering, Design, and Society and Qin Zhu, Humanities and Social Sciences

ABSTRACT

The concept “hidden curriculum” highlights the powerful role that unintentional and unplanned lessons in both formal and informal curricula play in shaping medical professionals’ ethical perceptions and identities. More recently, the concept expanded its influence to other fields of professional education including engineering education. This project explores what can be learned from historical and ongoing discussions on the hidden curriculum, then takes this to possibly discuss how to initiate research questions and cultivate ethical cultures in engineering education. There is also the goal to explore theoretical lenses for looking at hidden curriculum, and explore how ethics hidden curriculum happens in a structured way.

PRESENTATION

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY

Kylee Shiekh is in her second year as a Computational Applied Mathematics major, scheduled to graduate in May 2022. She’s minoring in Data Science as well. Her interest is not limited to these subjects, and hence she joined this research project. This project explores more of ‘how’ engineers learn rather than purely the material they will learn. She hopes to continue to graduate school in Applied Mathematics. Kylee has a specific interest in teaching and education in engineering, and hopes to use her graduate school education to benefit this interest in the future.

  1. Hi Kylee, thanks for your presentation. You did a great job with the delivery. My question is what are the next steps that could utilize your work? Reading and analyzing 70 papers is non-trivial and must have required quite a bit of your time.

    • Hello! We used this work to create a flash presentation for the APPE conference, which was the most significant outcome of the analysis. I do expect these insights to continue to influence how we view Hidden Curriculum in future work as well.

  2. Nice work, Kylee!

    • Hi Kylee! I had never heard of hidden curriculum and find it extremely interesting! Do you know why hidden curriculum drifted from its original use? Great job on your research!

  3. Hi Kylee, this was an incredible presentation, the execution of the presentation was very well thought out and practiced. Nice job!
