Bore-Hole Simulations for Oil and Gas Applications

Mohammed Hadi | mhadi@mines.edu

“Subterranean wave simulations through bore-hole telemetry has several applications including
1. Help guide targeted drill operations
2. Help anticipate dangerous gas pockets
3. Help in decision making to proceed from pilot drilling to full drilling operations
4. Help in disaster communications design through collapsed mines and caves”

Student Preparation

Qualifications

“1. Good programming skills in MATLAB
2. Physics II level understanding of Ampere’s and Faraday’s laws (PHGN200)”

Time Commitment

40 hours/month

Skills/Techniques Gained

“1. Learn to simulate electromagnetic wave phenomena using computational electromagnetics
2. Compile and run advanced codes on supercomputers
3. Early preparation to integrate in a research team for graduate school work in computational electromagnetics”

Mentoring Plan

Student will be guided through regular meetings to learn the method and codes to be used. They will also be provided access to computing platforms. They will also be actively integrated in the research team’s weekly meetings which include other undergraduate and graduate students. Student will also be encouraged and helped to produce and present publishable results.
