Design a data acquisition module for 500 channels

Manika Prasad | mprasad@mines.edu

This is part of a larger project where we are designing enhanced imaging techniques for biological and earth science purposes. The bigger project entails acquiring acoustic waveforms at multiple locations from a source that can be moved to ultimately provide a 3D image. The images are being acquired for tissue imaging (for breast cancer) and for rock deformations with stress.

Grand Engineering: Engineer the tools of scientific discovery

Student Preparation

Qualifications

Understanding of signal acquisition and digitization

Time Commitment

6 months

Skills/Techniques Gained

The student will gain insights on how to design circuits and assemble components. Further, since ultimately the acquisition is planned for 100s of channels, some economic calculations will be necessary to keep costs manageable.

Mentoring Plan

The team has a acoustic sensing, a seismic inversion, and an electronic engineer. All three will be available to the student for discussion. Some initial designs already exist. As per need and student request, we will have weekly meetings to mentor and assist the student in designing the module.
