Geophysical Data Integration Through Visualization and Virtual Reality

Whitney Trainor-Guitton | wtrainor@mines.edu

The project goals are interesting as we hope to metricize how virtual reality changes our perception of uncertainty in the subsurface. We want to couple geophysical inversion codes with the VR visualization to better understand how our geophysical sensor locations, inversion algorithms and visualizations would influence subsurface decisions.

Grand Engineering Challenge: Enhance virtual reality

Student Preparation

Qualifications

The student should have intermediate Python or other coding skills.
Some experience with Git and Bash
CS minor is preferred by not necessary

Time Commitment

20 hours/month

Skills/Techniques Gained

The student will gain insight into geophysical data analysis (seismic simulations and distributed acoustic sensing technology) and more coding experience.

Mentoring Plan

I will meet individually on a weekly basis with the student researcher. The student researcher will be invited to also attend our weekly group meeting and present progress about once a month. The student researcher will also have well documented code, tutorials and readme from the previous researcher.
