Project Info
Laser profiler
Jamal Rostami | rostami@mines.edu
In rock mechanics testing, measurement of sample before tests are critical. We are looking for a MechE or EE student to design and fabricate a laser profiler where rock samples can be set up and the dimensions of the sample be measured by laser to the accuracy of 0.001 or 0.0001 inch. We will purchase the parts and any needed material for fabrication.
More Information
This device does not exist and currently the measurements are done by hand and caliper. we would like to speed up the process and make it automatic. So there is no source for the project. there are ASTM standards for sample sizes measurement accuracy for rock testing that can be reviewed, but overall we can provide the specs for what we need fabricated.
Grand Engineering Challenge: Not applicable
Student Preparation
Qualifications
Seniors in EE or MechE should be able to work on this project.
Time Commitment
40 hours/month
Skills/Techniques Gained
Using laser measurement devices, setting up a table and automated railing for moving of the laser, and connecting it to a data acquisition system.
Mentoring Plan
I will be glad to help out and so is our lab manager, and as needed we can hire grad students and engage EE and MechE professors.
