Virtual Reality for Engineering Training

Sebnem Duzgun | duzgun@mines.edu and Ebru Bozdag | bozdag@mines.edu

The project will equip MURF students with tools of virtual reality and augmented reality so that various phenomena from mining and geophysics can be visualized in VR and AR. The models to be developed involve underground and surface mine environments, simulations results of Earth`s core-mental boundary and plumes on the Earth. The unity game engine will be used and students will learn how to model and visualize broad range of phenomena in unity. Students will also use the VR systems (oculus, rift, oculus go, oculus quest, walking VR) in the VR lab of the Mining Engineering Department as well as visualizing models in AR using magic leap.

Elucidate the interdisciplinary nature of the project

The project compiles knowledge of mining engineering, geophysics, and computer science and provides students with an interdisciplinary learning environment. Students will be given a clear description of the goals and road map. They will start working with Ph.D. students and the faculty. There will be weekly meetings with the PhD students and bi-weekly meeting with the whole project team including the faculty.
