Professional Development

The Professional Development Ore Cart includes activities that will allow students to acquire and hone the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to prepare for a successful transition from a college environment to a professional career.   

Completing an activity or actively engaging in experiences focused on Professional Development will display student’s skills that are:

Emerging
  • Demonstrate basic professional communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise emails, engage in polite and effective phone conversations, and participate in professional networking events.
  • Develop basic time management skills, allowing them to prioritize tasks, set goals, and manage their time for both academic and professional responsibilities.
  • Identify their career interests, strengths, and values, and set short-term and long-term career goals based on self-assessment.
  • Articulate understanding of competencies including critical thinking, professionalism, and teamwork and how they show up at Mines and in the student’s future.
  • Explain how one’s own social identity and lived experiences may contribute to one’s own understanding of “professionalism”.
Developing
  • Practice collaboration and/or team-building skills during student organization or community events.
  • Show initiative in learning and growing new skills and a willingness to learn when taking on new challenges.
  • Generate creative solutions by thinking critically and/or creatively.
  • Apply professional ethics including integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality.
  • Apply effective communication skills (oral and written) including active listening.
  • Integrate professional skills such as communication, critical thinking, and teamwork into their pursuits and efforts both on- and off-campus.
  • Engage with others while navigating different identities and respecting individual differences on a team.
  • Resolve disconnects between one’s personal identity and perspective on professionalism with other people’s identities and lived experiences.
