Colors, fonts and graphic elements

The Mines color palette is bold and distinctive. It relies primarily on our heritage colors of dark blue, light blue and Colorado red, along with generous white space. Secondary colors are used to add accent to layouts and should not be used more than 10 percent of the total color composition. By leaning on our heritage colors and plenty of open space, we create a modern, energized look that still celebrates our history.

Colors

All materials should include an approved Mines signature/logo, use the Mines color palette and follow typography guidelines. It is encouraged that students and student organizations use the approved Mines logos, but they must seek permission first.

How should I use Colorado Red on web pages?

Please refrain from using Colorado Red as a background color. Many typeface colors become inaccessible when placed on a Colorado Red background color. Colorado Red may be used as a shape or stroke color and should not make up more than 10 percent of the total color composition.

Accent Palette


The Mines accent color palette should never be used as the dominant fabric color for merchandise and apparel. These colors are meant to be used as accents that make up 10% or less of the total color composition of a piece. These colors should never be used as text colors.

Typography

Our communications use four very different typefaces that work together to bring our story to life. They each have their own strengths, so use the following section to guide your font choices for marketing purposes. These typefaces are for print materials only.

Website fonts

Website body text, heading text, and navigation should utilize the alternate substitute Open Sans. Avoid using Oswald, Halyard, Roboto Mono, and Boyrun on web pages, as they may not render correctly in some browsers. For older websites, the legacy fonts Lato for body text and Montserrat for headers and navigation can be retained, with consideration given to transitioning to Open Sans during redesigns.

Icongraphy

Icons are a great way to add an illustrative element to our brand. Our collection of icons represents the many facets of the Mines experience. Use icons sparingly, in situations where it’s important to convey an idea or experience. Icons should never be the focus of a layout; rather, they should aid in telling the story.
