2016 Chevron Lecture Series

Elizabeth Hausler
Founder, CEO, Build Change

After a major earthquake in a developing country, agencies typically build houses that are not
always culturally appropriate and sustainable in the local construction sector. Often,
homeowners are minimally involved in the process, and the houses built are not earthquakeresistant. To overcome these challenges, Dr. Hausler and Build Change are creating an
environment that allows earthquake reconstruction – and then construction moving forwards –
to become standard.

Dr. Hausler is a skilled brick, block, and stone mason with an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering
from the University of California, Berkeley, M.S. in Environmental Science from the University of
Colorado, and B.S. form the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. She has received
numerous awards including the 2011 US Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the Schwab
Foundation and the 2011 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability. Her work has been featured in
the New York Times, NPR, absNEWs World News Tonight, and Bloomberg Businessweek.
