Biography
Duncan teaches for the Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering interdisciplinary undergraduate program, focusing on engineering design and quantitative biology. He received the Outstanding Faculty award from QBE students in 2026. Duncan’s faculty appointment in the Engineering, Design & Society Department aligns with his passion for design and engineering education. He is the AI@Mines Faculty Champion for the EDS Department, serving as a liaison between industry members, the department, and the Mines community.
Duncan conducted graduate research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in healthcare science, engineering education, and 3D bioprinting. His research was funded by the NIH and the NSF and produced publications in journals such as Biofabrication and Biomedical Engineering Education. He has presented at annual conferences for the Society for Biomaterials, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
Duncan’s current research investigates the impact of ungrading on student mindsets in Capstone engineering design. As a professor at Mines, Duncan created and piloted the QBE Capstone Design course and initiated the BioBuilders Society makerspace with QBE students.
