The Team

About the Team

The Transdisciplinary Nanostructured Materials Research Team includes undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral and staff researchers from four academic departments and industrial sponsors.

The Transdisciplinary Nanostructured Materials Research Team (TNMRT) started in 2013 when Prof. Terry Lowe joined the George S. Ansell Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. The team integrates students from academic departments of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Physics, many of whom are studying within Mines’ interdisciplinary Materials Science Program or Quantitative Biosciences & Engineering Program. In addition, student, faculty, and industrial researchers from collaborating institutions worldwide visit and work temporarily as integral members of the team.

The following foundational principles underly the design of the research team:

  • Convergence between disciplines fuels innovation and discovery.
  • Diversity and respect for differences is integral to balance and overall success.
  • Teams outperform individuals – we work together to achieve project goals.

While the team includes high performing 4.0 GPA students, the composition of the team intentionally integrates individuals with a diverse range of strengths beyond just academic performance. Multicultural and multilingual backgrounds are core characteristics of the overall team to recognize the international span of the TNMRT research communities and sponsors.

The team focuses on fabricating and understanding materials with nanoscale structures and using these materials to explore nanoscale bio/nanomaterial interactions. Our team competencies fall under three main thrusts: 1) synthesis and processing of nanostructured materials, 2) characterizing their microstructures, surfaces, and biological responses, and 3) computational modeling of materials processing and cellular biotic/abiotic interface response. Understanding the biological properties of materials is a vital dimension of our research and is addressed through strategic collaborations within our campus interdisciplinary programs and with partner institutions.
