Together, individually and posthumously, Stewart ’50 and Johanna Collester have created one of the most generous endowed scholarship funds that will benefit Mines students for generations.
An endowment is structured to maintain the principle and pay out from dividends so the funds will continue to grow in perpetuity. Stewart created an endowed scholarship in 1985 to support petroleum refining engineering, geology and geophysics students. After Stewart passed away in 1993, his wife, Johanna, continued his legacy of giving back to Mines. In 2019, she made a generous gift to Mines to create a new scholarship that widened the criteria for scholarship recipients.
The Stewart and Johanna Collester Endowed Scholarship is open to Mines undergraduate students of all majors who demonstrate financial need. So far, 17 undergraduate students have received the scholarship.
