Data Platform for Smart Building Data

Gabriel Fierro
gtfierro@mines.edu
This project will explore the creation of a data platform (incorporating an HTTP API, database and basic execution model) for telemetry from building management systems. The project will be built upon the open-source Brick graph-based ontology (https://brickschema.org) which is being developed at Mines and NREL (among other organizations) and incorporate tag-based annotations from the Project Haystack project (https://project-haystack.org/). This project will involve interactions with industrial partners, academics at other universities and national labs. The produced data platform will be deployed over real buildings and be used to serve interactive dashboards and interesting data-driven applications. A small publication (workshop or conference paper) is possible upon completion of the project.

Student Preparation

Qualifications

Proficiency with Python 3 is a must. Ideally, the student also has experience in implementing  RESTful APIs and web servers. Familiarity with databases (relational, graph, NoSQL) is a bonus.

TIME COMMITMENT (HRS/WK)

5

SKILLS/TECHNIQUES GAINED

The student will gain experience with processing and serving real-world timeseries data (specifically from networked smart buildings) for analytics, semantic web technologies (OWL, RDF, SPARQL), RESTful API design and implementation. The student will also be well-positioned to participate further in DOE-funded projects using these technologies to work with data about buildings.

MENTORING PLAN

Student will participate in weekly meetings with the mentor (Dr. Gabe Fierro) as well as occasional meetings and demos with larger, multi-institutional research groups.
