Emerging Scholars Seminar Series

The Emerging Scholars Seminar Series offers weekly seminars on various topics of interest to undergraduate student researchers at Mines. Any interested students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend these free, weekly seminars. There are no limitations on attendance – simply find the seminars that are of interest to you and RSVP if necessary.

The Emerging Scholar Seminar Series is hosted in compliance with the social distancing guidance of Colorado School of Mines. In some cases, this may mean that seminars are hosted on Zoom while others remain in-person.

Title:  Build and Maintain Your Scholarly Identity

Date & Time:  November 8 at 3:00pm

Location: Arthur Lakes Library, Boettcher Room

Presenters:  Emily Bongiovanni, Scholarly Communications Librarian & Brianna Buljung, Teaching and Learning Librarian

Description: This session will discuss the academic publishing process, including identifying journals and the peer review process. It will also cover the different types of journals and publishing models, like Open Access publishing. No registration required.

 

Title: Tips for Applying to REU Opportunities

Date & Time: November 12 at 4:00pm

Presenter: Lakshmi Krishna, Director of Undergraduate Research Scholars

Details: REU stands for “Research Experience for Undergraduates.” Participation in summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs is an excellent way for undergraduate students to gain research experience and develop necessary professional and technical skills. This seminar will give an overview of what the REU program entails and tips for navigating the application process.

Description: In this emerging Scholar Seminar Series, four panelists—Lauren Zoe Baker (Goldwater Scholar 2020-21), Joel Been (Goldwater Scholar 2020-21), Ethan Perry (Goldwater Scholar 2021-22), and Kay Godel Gengenbach (Fellowship advisor), will share tips on how to prepare a strong application for Goldwater Scholarship.

Title: Using Work-Study to Conduct Undergraduate Research

Description: In this Emerging Scholar Seminar Series presentation, the Office of Undergraduate Research Scholars and Office of Financial Aid will present an overview of work-study and the steps you need to take to secure the award for a paid research position on campus.
