Resources For Faculty
You are an advisor. You are passionate about research and teaching. You are dedicated to the well-being of your graduate students. But, are you able to:
- provide your students with the skills needed to be the professional of tomorrow?
- work with every student to fully develop their written and oral communication skills?
- sit down with students to discuss career options and the choices each will face as they pursue their choosen career path?
- teach students the didactic skills needed to be a successful teacher?
- teach the skills necessary to balance the expectations of employers, funding agencies, professional societies, and family?
Given your workload, you might not be able to devote time to discussing these topics in sufficient depth with each of your students.
Given your background, you might not be comfortable engaging in non-technical discussions with your students. The Center for Professional Education can help. The Center assists advisors by:
- providing courses and workshops for students so they may be better prepared for their graduate careers
- helping students develop effective research and communication skills
- providing workshops and seminars to help you develop more effective and efficient advising skills
- helping to meet the “Broader Impact Criterion” and the ethics training required by the National Science Foundation. Several programs of the National Science Foundation require professional education of students funded by these programs. The Center offers this type of education, easing the task of writing proposals
- providing examples of advisor/student agreements to facilitate a conversation about transparent expectations and effective collaboration
