How to make move-in more sustainable!
Move-in can be an overwhelming process for students. Here are tips to make it less stressful and more sustainable!
PACKING:
- Only bring what you will use
- Avoid duplicates and talk to your roommates about sharing some items
- Wait on big purchases – you may find it at school for less
- Be thrifty – Goodwill and other second hand stores are just one shuttle ride away on the Ore Cart
- Pack in reusable containers that double as storage rather than disposable boxes
- Look for EnergyStar label on computers and appliances
AFTER UNPACKING ON CAMPUS
- Save your boxes to use again for move out – flattened boxes will fit under your bed or behind your desk
- Bring recyclables to the recycling dumpsters with BLUE lids, packing materials like plastic film, and block Styrofoam go into the trash dumpsters with BLACK lids
Pack Zero Waste
Wrap small items in clothes, sheets, or old newspapers and large items in blankets instead of bubble wrap and packing peanuts.
Consider packing the following:
- Reusable water bottle that can be filled up at one of the many water bottle refill stations
- Reusable coffee cup (the library coffee shop gives 10% discount for reusable coffee cups)
- Reusable shopping bag(s)
- Reusable plates, cups, and utensils for late night snacks
- Wool drying balls to replace dryer sheets
- Plastic free toiletries such as bar shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste tablets
- Eco-friendly soap, detergent, and cleaners
