Math Placement at Mines
Let’s get everyone into the right math class this Fall! This newsletter item is informational. You will receive a placement survey from Mines later this Spring. Please contact Professor Nicholas at nicholas@mines.edu with any questions about placement or math/statistics courses.
General placement guidelines:
- Most students will start in Calc I
- AP Calculus AB 4 or 5 places you into Calc II
- AP Calculus BC 5 places you into Calc III (an AB subscore of 4 or 5 can place you into Calc II)
- Students who already have Calc III credit can take Differential Equations.
- Students who already have credit beyond that point should reach out for guidance on placement.
Honors Calc III:
If you are going to be placed into Calc III, consider taking Honors Calc III instead. This will place you in a cohort of students who also enjoy math and are intrinsically motivated. The class is not harder than the regular Calc III but will involve more applications and more theory of calculus.
Alternate Math Sequence Pilot
Professor Mike Nicholas was recently awarded an Alfred E. Jenni Fellowship to develop an alternative core math sequence at Mines. The aim of the pilot is to modernize our delivery of calculus and to incorporate data into the core math sequence. We will pilot this sequence in Fall 2024.
The current core track (required for most students) is:

In the pilot, students will instead take:

This sequence will take a modern approach to calculus in the form of computing and applications while maintaining the rigor of the traditional calculus sequence. The Data-Driven STEM course will be a view of how data is used at Mines and in the STEM professions. It will include data visualization, statistics, data science, signal processing, and linear algebra.
We believe this sequence will be advantageous for Mines students for the following reasons:
- Data and computing are at the heart of all modern STEM disciplines, and this sequence will provide a solid foundation for students.
- With the data course, students will be able to learn and do more in the subsequent Differential Equations course.
- Data Driven STEM will also satisfy the requirements for our Introduction to Statistics course, so the sequence is something of a “buy four, get one free” situation.
This sequence would be a great choice for any incoming Mines student who has not yet had calculus, has taken calculus but does not have calculus credit, or any student with Calc I credit who would prefer the modernized sequence with a focus on application and data. Students will be given an opportunity to opt into this sequence when Mines sends a placement survey. Space will be limited to four sections.

Have you considered a major in Mining Engineering?
From the Mining Engineering Department
Mining engineers are the Swiss army knife of the engineering world. We work underwater, underground, on the surface, and eventually on the moon and beyond.
Our areas of knowledge include civil, mechanical, electrical, geological, chemical, and environmental engineering, along with business and finance, safety, social responsibility, and the law.
More importantly, we understand how to tie these disciplines together, and how they relate to each other for the success of a project.
Learn more about this exciting program by visiting the Mining Engineering website.

Discover Geophysics at Mines: Exploring Earth and Beyond
From the Geophysics Department
Are you looking for an exciting technology-leading major? Have you considered Geophysics?

Disability Support Services
What is a disability? The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines disability as a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.”
The ADA regulations include both visible and invisible impairments, such as physical and physiological impairments, mental and psychological disorders, intellectual disabilities, and specific learning disabilities among many others.
Disability Support Services (DSS) works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to minimize barriers and support an accessible campus community. When barriers to access occur, Disability Support Services works one-on-one with students to determine accommodations and facilitate access to programs and services. If you are a student with a disability in need of accommodations, please visit our website for more information and to access the online accommodation request form. DSS is located at 1225 17th Street.
In preparation for registering with DSS, please consider collecting and/or requesting updated disability documentation from your provider including diagnostic evaluation records, current school disability records (IEP/504, if applicable), and any medical documentation to support your request for accommodations.
While students can register and request accommodations with DSS at any time, early submission helps to facilitate the coordination of accommodations by the start of the semester.
